The Garden Salad at Il Ritorno

Garden Salad. When two food photographers gush over a stunningly composed salad at Il Ritorno, you know that there’s something really special going on. This salad is a microcosm of the detail, care, and attention of the chefs.

The Garden Salad has been my favorite since the fall. I love the playful take on a raised vegetable garden. Its base (the soil) is a puree of butternut squash with fall spices.  Sprouting out of the soil is carrots, radishes, turnips, pickled ramps, and turnip greens, all boxed in with crunchy pumpernickel thins.

The Garden Salad, so aptly named, is under the Antipasti section in Il Ritorno’s menu.
